2011 Electronic Perscripbing Incentive Program Update - CMS

Many of you involved in the ePrescribe Incentive Program have heard the updates from CMS regarding the payment adjustment on their Medicare Part B Physicians Fee Schedule beginning in 2012 based on 2011 electronic prescribing.

There are two basic guidelines to avoid this payment adjustment:

  • Utilize an ePrescribe system
  • Report the eRx measure for at least 10 unique eRx events (per provider) between January 1, 2011 – June 30, 2011.

The two basic rules for ePrescribe in 2011 to avoid the adjustment in 2012 AND receive your ePrecribe incentive:

  • Report 10 ePrescribe events BEFORE JUNE 30 through claims between now and June to AVOID THE ADJUSTMENT in 2012
  • Report on the 25+ instances in 2011 that allow you to EARN THE INCENTIVE.

This can be done either via claims or using the CINA Registry.

Please note that even if you earn the eRx incentive for 2011 through CINA’s reporting efforts, you would still receive the payment adjustment in 2012 for not reporting 10 eRx events VIA CLAIMS. The eRx reporting via claims must be done for EACH PROVIDER.

Meaningful Use and ePrescribe: If you intend on applying for Meaningful Use in 2011, you will not be eligible for the 2% incentive associated with the ePrescibe Incentive Program (since ePrescribing is an objective associated with Meaningful Use). You will still be able to report on both PQRI and Meaningful Use.
