One the most time-consumptive and costly efforts of any research project involve data abstraction and collection. When clinical data is needed, especially from the ambulatory setting, abstraction is generally a manual process even if the practice is using an electronic medical record. Using the CINA’s technology, researchers are assured of discrete, validated data extraction virtually real-time from ambulatory clinical records.

 

The CINA Mapper™, a core component for data abstraction, supports a dynamic data collection process, making it simple for researchers to add or subtract data elements as needed. As is often the process with research, additional questions surface in the process of data capture and analysis and CINA’s ability to easily capture additional retrospective data elements with little additional effort is second to none.

 

The CINA Protocol Engine™ and Point of Care Decision Support tool is also invaluable in the research setting. Having a customizable, easy to use process for reminding providers to capture needed data, identity potential research candidates, and generate data collection tools based on patient characteristics brings research activities into the normal workflow of patient care.

 

DARTNet provides an example of how CINA is working closely with researchers to capture validated data elements in a federated model involving multiple provider groups with disparate EMRs. The primary study currently in process with DARTNet is around depression management in the primary care setting. However, in addition to this study, CINA is participating with researchers to utilize the DARTNet patient population for studies targeting Methcillin Resistent Staph Aureus (MRSA) management, peer mentoring in diabetes, and medication adherence.
